Best time to visit the Bahamas

The best time to visit the Bahamas depends on your preferences and the type of experience you’re seeking. The Bahamas has a tropical climate, and the weather can vary throughout the year. Here are some considerations for different times of the year:

  1. High Tourist Season (December to April): This period is the peak tourist season in the Bahamas. The weather is generally warm and dry, making it ideal for beach activities and water sports. The sea is calm, and there’s a lower chance of rain. However, prices for accommodations and activities tend to be higher, and popular destinations may be more crowded.
  2. Shoulder Seasons (May and September to November): The months of May and September to November are considered shoulder seasons. During these times, you can find a balance between good weather and potential cost savings. May is just before the official start of the hurricane season, and November is after the peak tourist season.
  3. Hurricane Season (June to November): The official hurricane season in the Bahamas runs from June to November, with the highest risk of hurricanes or tropical storms occurring between August and October. While the risk of a direct hit is not guaranteed, it’s essential to monitor weather forecasts and consider travel insurance during this period.
  4. Whale Watching (January to March): If you’re interested in whale watching, particularly for humpback whales, the months of January to March are when these magnificent creatures migrate through the Bahamas.
  5. Cultural Events and Festivals: The Bahamas hosts various cultural events and festivals throughout the year, such as Junkanoo in late December and early January, which is a vibrant and lively celebration with parades, music, and colorful costumes.

The best time to visit the Bahamas depends on your preferences, but some say the best times are in mid-December to mid-April and November or late April

  • Winter and early spring This is the high season, with cooler, drier weather and fewer rain showers. It’s also a time for many cultural festivals and events, including Junkanoo, a parade with music, dance, and costumes.
  • November or late April These months have fine weather and fewer crowds, and you’re still outside the hurricane season.
  • Summer The water temperatures are at their warmest, making it perfect for diving and exploring marine life. However, there’s also a greater chance of rain, and the sun is hotter and more humid.

January and February

It is the best time to travel to the Bahamas in climatic terms. The hurricane season has ended, it hardly rains, and it only shines in the sky, but without suffocating. Conditions are excellent for diving, snorkeling, or just lying on the beach. There may also be opportunities to spot humpback whales and whale sharks. The only bad thing is that they are very touristy months on the islands and everything is somewhat crowded.

March and April

From March the level of tourists drops a bit, but we are still in high season. The temperature increases and the percentage of humidity, even though the rains are not frequent, at least until April. It is an excellent time to see the bull shark and humpback whales, who will soon abandon these things in search of other warmer waters. At the end of April, the low season begins, and the rates decrease in price.

The climate is friendly; the beaches are free of tourists, so it is a good time if you are looking for tranquility and peace. The whales are already leaving, and only the pilot whales remain. The possibilities of observing dolphins, rays, and turtles are still new. On Cat Island, you can see sharks hunting for migratory tunas. Surfers will have to go to The Abacos and Rum Cay, which have sound waves all year round because the rest of the beaches are too calm to ride.

May

Temperatures range between 23ºC and 28ºC, although there are also more abundant rains. There is a great annual Carnival  (at the beginning of the month or sometimes at the end of April). Nassau is filled with live music, parties, and parades.

Those travelers who want to avoid the crowds of the high season prefer to travel here in the low season, which is May, June, and November with maximum daytime temperatures of 27ºC and water temperatures between 23ºC and 26ºC, quite stable and ideal for a beach vacation. But it must bear in mind that this is precisely the hurricane season in the Bahamas, specifically in the months between June and November. Here is more information about the hurricane season in the Bahamas.

Bahamas geography

The Bahamas are made up of 700 islands and more than 2,400 coral reefs, and this is where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. The Bahamas are located in the extreme northeast of the Caribbean; this insulting state belongs, geographically, to Central America. Still, although the islands mostly belong to the Caribbean, some individual islands are in the Atlantic. Depending on your resort, you can take a day trip due to its proximity to Cuba in the southwest or Florida to the northwest.

A special feature is the incredible extension of the island state, the west-east latitude is approximately 750 kilometers, and the north-south extension is 650 kilometers. Therefore the islands occupy a large area in the Atlantic. In general, the Bahamas islands are quite flat; its highest mountain is Mount Alvernia on the island of Cat Iceland, at 63 meters high.

Another curious fact is that of the numerous islands, not all are inhabited; only 30 of them are, among which is New Providence, with the capital of Nassau and Grand Bahama. The majority of the population lives in one of those two.

The climate in the Bahamas

Even though the Bahamas cover a large area entirely, the climate is almost the same on every island. It is characterized by a moderate subtropical climate, unlike the rest of the Caribbean islands, where it is considered a little warmer.

The Gulf Stream provides a temperate climate, especially in the winter months, that can count on cool breezes if colder winds from the North American mainland influence the islands, particularly affecting winter temperatures in the northern parts of the United States. The climate of the Bahamas is affected by the hot, tropical air that comes from the Caribbean.

The temperate climate of the Bahamas guarantees low-temperature fluctuations throughout the year, which means that it is practically hot summer throughout the year. However, if there are small differences between the winter and summer seasons, as I tell you below, daytime temperatures range between 25º and 27º and with 6 and 9 rainy days a month in winter.

Practically no rain and humidity are also lower in winter than in summer months which is very attractive. In summer, temperatures rise to 32ºC, and at night they remain at 24ºC; thanks to the permanent cool breeze, these high temperatures are bearable, on the other hand. The rainy season begins to be appreciated in the Bahamas in summer, with 17 rainy days in September and higher humidity levels.

Bahamas weather – regional differences

In general, the climate is very similar in all the islands that make up the Bahamas. However, there is a climatic difference between the northern and southern islands. It is colder in the north than in the south because of the wind. Cold blowing from North America leads to cooling temperatures, especially in the winter months. It can cause normal temperatures in January to drop from 17ºC to 10ºC, while on the other hand, the climate of the southern Bahamas, not being influenced by the currents of cold winds from America, temperatures are always slightly higher.

Hurricane season in the Bahamas

The Bahamas are located in the catchment area for tropical cyclones, that is, the so-called hurricanes. The hurricane season in the Bahamas prevails in the summer months, specifically in June, July, August, September, October, and November. You should remember that strong storms will await you if you decide to travel to the Bahamas during this period.

However, it is unlikely that hurricanes will hit the Bahamas directly. However, although this is the theory, in practice, we find that in 2017 the hurricane season was more active than usual, and the Bahamas took a great hit from two hurricanes, Irma and María, or the Hurricane Joaquin in 2015, so be prepared if you decide to travel to the Bahamas in hurricane season.

My tips on when to travel to the Bahamas

Suppose you want to enjoy earthly paradise without any restrictions. In that case, I recommend planning your trip for December, January, February, March, or April since these months are the best time to travel to the Bahamas. Just in winter is when you will have the ideal weather conditions, the temperatures are not too high in these months, and the humidity is quite bearable.
