Why did Camilla not attend Diana's funeral?

Camilla at diana funeral or Why did Camilla not attend Diana’s funeral? Was it due to Charles not being over her yet or were there other reasons?

Camilla at diana funeral, then the girlfriend of Prince Charles, was not in attendance at Princess Diana’s funeral. However, Charles and Camilla made their relationship public a year after Diana’s death in 1997, and eventually married in 2005.

At the time of Diana’s death, there was a lot of anger at the royal family for how they treated Diana while she was alive, and for how they handled her death. Some even speculated that the monarchy might collapse.

Camilla was NOT welcome at Diana’s funeral. Camilla had been having an affair with Charles for the entire time Diana was married to him ml. Diana despised Camilla…Rightly so.

Camilla, now the Queen Consort, did not attend Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997 primarily due to the sensitive circumstances surrounding Diana’s death and her relationship with Prince Charles at the time.

Here are a few reasons why she was absent or Camilla at diana funeral:

  1. Public Sensitivity: At the time of Diana’s death, the public sentiment was strongly in favor of Diana, and many viewed her as a beloved figure. Camilla’s presence at the funeral could have been controversial and potentially overshadowed the mourning for Diana.
  2. Charles’s Relationship: Although Charles and Camilla were in a relationship, it was complicated by the public and media scrutiny. Charles was still grappling with the public fallout from his marriage to Diana, which likely influenced the decision for Camilla to stay away.
  3. Respect for Diana: Many speculate that Camilla chose to avoid attending out of respect for Diana and the family’s grief, recognizing the emotional weight of the occasion.
  4. Royal Protocol: There may have been considerations of royal protocol and the norms surrounding funerals and public mourning that influenced the decision.

Ultimately, Camilla’s absence was likely a combination of personal, public, and royal factors that made her attendance at Diana’s funeral inappropriate at that time.

Camilla at diana funeral? Was it due to Charles not being over her yet or were there other reasons?

Why would she have attended? They were not related.Doubtless if she had attended all hell would have been let loose, which is probably why she decided to pay respects in private. And you are deliberately trolling by asking this – 26 years after the event! Camilla at diana funeral.

Did Prince Charles want the state funeral for Princess Diana?

Yes he did.

The Queen was opposed to the idea. Charles’ reasonings were entirely pragmatic ones because if Diana was not given a state funeral there would have been public outcry because many people still loved her intensely

There were no plans for a state funeral for her instead they had to tweak the plans for the Queen Mother’s funeral partly because that plan was the one that was most rehearsed and partly because it was quite grand, they couldn’t use the plan for Princess Margaret’s funeral for example because it was not grand enough only a Queen’s funeral would do

The prime minister at the time Tony Blair wanted a state funeral on the grounds that she was the mother of a future king

The Queen was opposed because she was no longer a member of the royal family her thoughts were shared by most senior members of the royal family but thankfully pragmatism prevailed

Two things should be noted in this instance: Camilla at diana funeral:

  1. the Queen and the royal family were not intensely disliked by the British public because of Diana that is evident by the fact that the Queen had to do so little to regain public support
  2. The British public got what they wanted, they got a state funeral for the ‘people’s princess’ and they got some recognition from the royal family even if it was at the expense of her 12 and 15 year old sons

What the whole Diana episode proved was that the royal family is no longer a rigid and unchanging institution but a constant but adaptable one

God save the Queen

If Camilla were not in the picture, would Prince Charles and Diana’s marriage have lasted?

Were there other factors that led to their divorce? If Camilla has not been in the picture at all. Diana would never got the chance to marry Charles and became the HRH Princess of Wales.

This is Amanda Knatchbull, granddaughter of the Louis Mountbatten, and the preferred choice for Charles and the Royal Family as the consort. Her family had too agreed, but why wasn’t she the Princess. Camilla. Prince Charles infatuation with Camilla was quite well known within his friends.

Georgiana Russell, Daughter of Sir John Russell (Ambassador to Spain)

Jane Wellesley, daughter of the 8th Duke of Wellington

Even Diana’s own Sister Sarah Spencer were considered superior candidates for Charles.

Yet they rejected the role of Charles’ Wife as they knew Charles don’t like them and is in love with Camilla.

Diana accepted the offer even though she knew something was wrong. This is primarily due to her upbringing and personality.

As an unwanted child, her parents had wanted a boy when they were having Diana. In fact she did not even have a proper name after 1 week of birth as her parents were expecting a boy. When she was growing up she was a wallflower with low self-esteem and self doubt from her troubled upbringings. Culminating in her studies- failing her O’levels twice and did not continue her education unlike most children of nobility.

So the only reason why Diana was chosen was because she had no other choice. Before marrying the Prince she was a kindergarten school assistant and cleaning her Sister’s house (basically a nanny and a cleaner).

Camilla at diana funeral. Why did she not attend funeral?

She wasn’t very charismatic or good with guys thus her virginity which was preferred by the old Guards in the Royal Household. (Which wasn’t really an issue despite tabloid gossip, Amanda Knatchbull has boyfriends prior to Charles but she was the primal candidate)

If you had been seen as worthless all your life by your parents (cause you are not the boy they want), by your teachers and even yourself (poor academic performance and lowly jobs). Suddenly a Prince propose to you to become the Princess the future Queen. Will you say no. Even if you knew he had his heart elsewhere. Even if you knew you are just a breeding mare for the Windsor Dynasty. Would you say no.

Camilla was out of the picture not because of her colourful past and flirtatious attitude. Rather simply because she thought Charles wasn’t serious about her and married before Charles could do anything.

According to the Robert Lacey’s 2008 book Royal: Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II. Charles has met Camilla too early, he did not confirm their relationship before he went for tours. Which Camilla simply took as a rejection and married Andrew Parker Bowles instead.

Furthermore, Louis Mountbatten was pushing for Charles to marry his granddaughter Amanda Knatchbull. Camilla was in an on and off relationship with Andrew long before Charles. Thus culminating in one of the greatest tragedy in Royal family today.

Why was Camilla Parker Bowles invited to attend Charles and Diana’s wedding?

Camilla at diana funeral, as Prince Charles explained to Diana when she confronted him right before the wedding, had been “one of his most intimate friends” but that their “intimacy had ended.”

Camilla was invited to the wedding at St. Paul’s Cathedral, her husband at the time, Andrew Parker Bowles, escorted Charles and Diana’s horse-drawn carriage back to Buckingham Palace. Bedell Smith, in her biography of Prince Charles Prince Charles (The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life), writes that Camilla acted as a disturbing intrusion to Diana on what should have been a happy day.

“Diana later said she had been so fixated on Camilla that as her father strolled up the aisle at St. Paul’s Cathedral, she raked the congregation until her eyes fell on her nemesis, in her ‘pale grey, veiled pillbox hat.'” After the parade back to the palace, Camilla and Andrew were noticeably not invited to the wedding breakfast hosted for 120 guests. At least Diana had that.

Camilla at diana funeral. Why did she not attend funeral?

Inviting former flames to their wedding, in these circles, is nothing new and it doesn’t necessarily mean anything. Without going too far back, among the guests for Meghan and Harry’s ceremony at St George’s Chapel, in Windsor, was Chelsy Davy, who had an on-off relationship with Harry, and Cressida Bonas, another former girlfriend.

It was rumored the ex-girlfriends were off the guest list for the after party, but it appears Ms Davy and Ms Bonas got invited to the service.

The Prince and Ms Davy remained friends after going different ways seven years ago, and she has been a regular at royal functions. Does this mean anything? No, it doesn’t say anything.

We all loved Princess Diana for many reasons. Many of us have always been very protective of her. Especially after that tragic accident. But if we took a step back and tried to see things objectively, we have to remember Princess Diana had a very fragile personality and insecure (about herself).

This was not because of Camilla or the way she was treated by Prince Charles. Her insecurities come from things that happened way before her engagement, in her childhood. When her parents separated, her mother had to leave the family home and the children. We cannot forget that she always struggled with the fear of rejection and abandonment. Unfortunately, when these issues are not dealt with, they can make us see things that are not.

Did Camilla play a role in the end of Charles and Diana’s marriage? If so, what was her involvement?

No. I don’t think she played any role in the breakup of Charles and Diana’s marriage – except perhaps a very passive one in Diana’s head.

Yes – Charles and Camilla had had a love affair way back in 1970, ten years before Charles started dating Diana. Charles wanted to marry Camilla then but was told that it was impossible as Camilla wasn’t suitable to be the wife of the heir to the throne. So Charles and Camilla split up and, in 1973 (when Diana was still a child) Camilla married Andrew Parker-Bowles, who was a very close friend of the Royal family and who Charles had known all his life.

The Queen Mother was connected in some way to the parents of Andrew Parker-Bowles. She had been Andrew’s Godmother at his Christening. Also, in 1953, when Andrew was 13, he had been chief page boy at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. So Andrew P.B. was almost a part of the Royal Family all his life! Andrew was in Charles’s polo team and he kept a string of racehorses and actually rode one in the Grand National.

Camilla at diana funeral. Why did she not attend funeral?

Andrew P.B. often accompanied the Queen or the Queen Mother or Princess Anne (who he had dated before he married Camilla) to races and equestrian events etc.- as well as playing Polo with Charles of course. So naturally, Charles stayed friends with Andrew and Camilla after they were married and Andrew PB stayed a part of Charles’s life and so did Camilla, When Camilla and Andrew had their first child they asked Charles to be his Godfather.

Charles remained close friends with both Camilla and Andrew after they were married and for the following 6 years while he was dating various girls to find a suitable wife. (He was under pressure to marry SOON and continue the dynasty!) One of the girls he dated then was Diana’s elder sister.

Charles would often have his girlfriend of the moment with him when he visited Camilla and Andrew or when they all went out together to some event or other. Naturally, when he started dating Diana in 1980, he did the same thing. Diana didn’t like horses though – or dogs – but she got on well with Andrew and Camilla, and their two children, until she discovered that Camilla and Charles had had a serious love affair ten years previously and had been very much in love then.

Camilla at diana funeral

Normal people would not have worried too much about their partners married ex, even if they were still close friends. However Diana was paranoiac and VERY jealous and possessive. She was literally “insane with jealousy”. She was furious when Charles, naturally, invited the friend of the family, Andrew Parker-Bowles, to the wedding – along with his wife Camilla, of course.

She was even more incensed when she found out that Charles had given an engraved bracelet to Camilla at the wedding – but then he had given a similar bracelet, also suitably engraved with some little personal message, to EVERY specially invited female guest (the male guests each got a pair of cuff-links).

So Diana’s jealousy of Camilla might have been the beginning of what led to end of the marriage but that was not the fault of Camilla. She had done nothing. It was all in Diana’s head.

Camilla at diana funeral. Why did she not attend funeral?

Diana and Charles married in 1981 and Charles found out just how jealous, paranoiac and possessive Diana was. She made Charles get rid of his his beloved old Labrador dog because she said he gave it too much attention that should have been given to her.

She was jealous of his dog. She tore up his watercolour paintings because she thought he spent too much time painting instead of concentrating on her. And Diana also insisted that Charles should drop ALL connection with Camilla and Andrew Parker-Bowles.

Charles did everything she asked. He really did his best, and for the five years following his marriage to Diana he never saw Camilla again. He was totally faithful to Diana. (This fact has been well verified by many people. Friends of Camilla at the time and also friends of Charles have said that they never once met during those five years. No newspaper reporter ever found an instance either – and they REALLY tried!

There is absolutely NO shred of proof that Charles didn’t keep his word and stay faithful to Diana. Even Diana herself admitted that Charles had been been faithful to her during those first five years. She also admitted – on television – that SHE had been the first one to commit adultery!

Camilla at diana funeral? Was it due to Charles not being over her yet or were there other reasons?

Unfortunately, Charles being faithful and trying to please her wasn’t really enough for Diana. She had produced William and Harry but she wanted much more from Charles than he was capable of of giving. She wanted constant devotion, admiration and utter adoration. She wanted drama, excitement and thrills and the sort of love that happened in her step-grandmother, Barbara Cartland’s, romantic novels (only Diana also wanted a thrilling, exciting sex life as well.)

As heir to the throne Charles was busy with his various duties and commitments and affairs of state. He had no support from Diana and he and Diana had absolutely nothing in common and shared no interests. He was a lot older than she was. He was also well educated, very intelligent, well read, artistic, musical, intellectual but a bit fuddy-duddy and old-fashioned. He also loved the countryside and the outdoor life, horses and dogs.

Camilla at diana funeral. Why did she not attend funeral?

Diana was the direct opposite of all those things. Everything that Charles loved, everything that was an important part of his life, she hated.

So, while Charles was being faithful to Diana, she was not being faithful to him. She first had an affair with her married police bodyguard, Barry Mannakee, in 1985. She was besotted with him and said she was only happy when she was near him. Charles knew all about the affair of course but he stayed faithful to Diana throughout it. The affair with Barry Mannakee ended in the spring of 1986 when Barry lost his job because of the scandal.

Shortly afterwards Diana began another affair – this time with James Hewitt. She said she was in love with him. That affair was to last 5 years, but after she had been with James Hewitt for nearly 6 months, and showed no sign of ending the affair, Charles finally gave up on Diana and said his marriage was “finished and irrevocably broken”.

It was AFTER that break-up – in the December of 1986 – when Charles took up with Camilla again. It wasn’t prearranged. Charles was unhappy because he knew that his marriage to Diana was over, because of her continuing infidelity.

Camilla was unhappy because her marriage was over too (Andrew had been unfaithful to her for years and recently he had left Camilla and the children and was living with one of his mistresses.) So a mutual friend took pity on both Charles and Camilla and invited them both to her house where they met again for the first time in 5 years.

There again Camilla had no part in the breakup of Diana’s marriage. She didn’t seek Charles out. Diana broke up her marriage herself because of her affairs. If she had stayed faithful to Charles he would, most likely, have stayed faithful to her. (Charles took honour and duty very seriously.)

Camilla at diana funeral. Why did she not attend funeral?

Diana’s affair with James Hewitt lasted for five years and ended in 1991. She continued to have many more affairs – each more sordid and scandalous than the last and half of them were with married men. She broke up 3 marriages as well as her own and was investigated by police for stalking and harassing the wife of one lover (Oliver Hoare.) She was cited in a divorce case and described in newspapers as “teetering on the edge of madness” and “A nutcase who preys on the wives of married men”. At that point her popularity with the public reached an all-time low.

( I was living in London throughout the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, and I remember it all so well.)

Through all this Camilla and Charles continued their relationship but Camilla kept discretely out of the limelight. Charles and Diana finally divorced (on orders of The Queen) in 1996, but the marriage had really ended 10 years earlier – in the winter of 1986.

After Charles and Diana had divorced and come to terms with it all, Diana herself said that Camilla had not been responsible in any way for the break-up.

No – Camilla had no role to play in the break up of the marriage of Charles and Diana. Diana did that herself.

Did Prince Charles want the state funeral for Princess Diana?

Diana was not entitled to a state funeral – very few people are- but Charles wanted a funeral that would befit her status and in the event they used plans that had been drawn up for the Queen Mother’s funeral- she also did not have an actual state funeral.

The Spencers wanted a private funeral but the public wanted more – as the histrionics attested.

Charles wanted her treated with all respect because, although they were divorced he bore her no ill will and she was the mother of his children.

He wore a dark blue suit to the funeral because it was a suit Diana had always liked him in. SO he showed a lot of care for her, contrary to what many people prefer to believe.

Why did Prince Charles decide to go to Paris to bring Princess Diana’s body back?

Why did Prince Charles decide to go to Paris to bring [Diana, Princess of Wales’] body back?

Because he was devastated by her death.

After their divorce, he and Diana had developed an agreeable relationship, for their children’s sake. Don’t forget – he had known her for years before marrying her. He dated her sister, and I understand that the Spencer family children were playmates for the younger Royals.

In spite of everything that had happened, Diana was the mother of Charles’ children. She was also the mother of a future King. Charles wanted to ensure those things were recognized as part of her passing.

He also wanted to make sure that no one got in and took photos of the corpse. That all possible decorum was observed. Frankly, the Prince of Wales has a lot more “pull” than Diana’s two sisters. Where someone might have been able to brush off things they wanted, no one was going to cross Charles just then.

This is Prince Charles leaving the hospital where Diana died:

Did Prince Charles want the state funeral for Princess Diana?

He insisted on it. By the time Diana Princess of Wales died, they had put aside their past differences and were actually getting along. Allegedly, Charles was devastated by her death. He knew how heartbroken their sons would be and he of course was upset about that. He loves his sons and it must have been terrible to have to break it to them.

There is also the fact that her death meant he had to put his marriage to Camilla on hold. The public would have crucified him if he had married Camilla on the heels of Diana’s death. Personally, I think they had to put it on hold until after the Queen Mother passed on anyway. But Diana’s death brought out all the old emotions of the public toward her. They adored her and blamed him for everything. Which certainly wasn’t fair, but there you are. Edit: Wow, thank you all so much for all the upvotes. I never expected that.

Where was Camilla during Diana’s funeral?

I’d guess, and purely that, she’d have stayed at her private home Ray Mill House and watched it on TV like the rest of us. She kept very much out of the public eye during that time but no doubt would have wanted to know what happened so if Charles needed her support she would be there for him.

Why did the late Queen refuse to attend Camilla’s birthday?

Late Queen Refused to Attend Camilla’s Birthday Party Before Marriage to Charles

Queen Elizabeth was incredibly fond of her daughter-in-law Camilla.

Despite their close bond, the late Queen chose not to attend a birthday party held in Camilla’s honor before her marriage to then-Prince Charles.

In July 1997, Charles hosted an extravagant celebration for Camilla’s 50th birthday at Highgrove, marking the first joint event for the couple after Charles’ divorce from Princess Diana. This event was seen as an attempt to bring their relationship into the open. Read More Full Detail please see Comments box:

How is the relationship between Prince Charles and Camilla defined?

I suppose not married for his great uncle had to abdicate to wed a divorcée. Is Charles technically single? If not, how could he be allowed to wed? Or am I missing something? Thanks

Edward did not have to abdicate to marry a divorcee. He was told that if her married her he could not make her his queen so he threw his toys out of the pram and abdicated, then spent a considerable amount of time trying to get HItler to invade England and put him and her on the throne.

Yes, you are missing something – the fact that the Abdication crisis was nearly 90 years ago and attitudes to divorce have changed radically in society, the Royal Family and the C of E.

The C of E never had the power to prevent a divorced person remarrying in a civil ceremony , and dropped the ban on remarriage in church in 2002.

So, no, Charles is not single. He and Camilla are legally married . There is no question of him being ‘allowed to wed’ – he had as much right to be married as anybody else. You suppose wrong!

Times have moved on and so should you!

And since you are American, why does it bother you anyway?

If Camilla were not in the picture, would Prince Charles and Diana’s marriage have lasted?

Were there other factors that led to their divorce? If Camilla were not in the picture, would Prince Charles and Diana’s marriage have lasted? Were there other factors that led to their divorce?

No, it wouldn’t have lasted. Yes, there were other factors. It was those other factors that sent Prince Charles back to Camilla in the first place.

Charles was older and settled. Diana was 19 and very immature. Charles was a “little bit country”; Diana was a “little bit rock and roll”. He was ready to sit back at his country home, pottering around in his experimental garden. Diana was young and wanted to get out and party. The last thing she wanted to do was sit home with that old fuddy-duddy.

Charles was accustomed to the fishbowl that is Royal life. Diana couldn’t possibly have had any clue what she was in for. Even spending several months with the Queen Mother to “learn the ropes” of being a Queen Consort couldn’t have prepared her (or Charles, for that matter) to the unrelenting, disrespectful, abominable treatment the couple received from the press. It was unprecedented in its level of viciousness.

Why did Camilla not attend Diana’s funeral? Was it due to Charles not being over her yet or were there other reasons?

Charles, like many men of his age and social status, tends to be reserved. To hold things in. Diana was emotionally unstable. She had abandonment issues. They could not communicate as a husband and wife should. This, more than anything else, is what drove Charles back to Camilla.

Charles and Diana pretty much had nothing in common from the start. Charles was pressured into marrying. He was 32 and unmarried. He’d been “playing the field” as the world’s most eligible bachelor for years. But, when a man like that hits 30 without a wife, whispers begin. I think that, more than anything else, was what drove the powers-that-be to hand him a short list of “suitable” young women (young, healthy, no background for the press to exploit) and tell him to pick one – any one – and produce an heir so the whispers would stop.

So, he looked at the list and chose Diana. He knew her – he’d dated her sister, after all, and she’d spent time at Sandringham as a child. She was a nursery school teacher. She was quiet, demur, and obedient. Charles felt he could have a comfortable, companionable marriage. Not a passionate one, but people in his position historically didn’t expect passion. They simply wanted a marriage that worked for the needs of the Crown. He had no idea what would happen.

Camilla at diana funeral. Why did she not attend funeral?

I’ve seen it written that Charles was “jealous” of Diana’s popularity. I don’t agree. I remember when she went from frumpy nursery school teacher to international sensation. I believe he was worried. He had figured out that her emotional issues meant she was craving love and looking for it in all the wrong places. Not physical love – but emotional love – the kind that soothed her abandonment issues.

She would draw in people she thought loved her, only to discover they were only there because of who she was. If she had knocked on their doors at 2am bleeding from her eyes, they would have left her on the porch to wait for an ambulance…unless, of course, there was something in it for them.

Charles, having grown up in this lifestyle, already knew about those people. He knew how to avoid them, or at least keep them at arm’s length. Diana did not. I truly believe he worried about what those people would do to her, emotionally, when she learned that they weren’t actually her friends.

To her credit, Diana did eventually catch on to most of the blood-suckers. She finally found her “niche” in life. She discovered she could fill her need for attention and adoration by doing good works for those who normally received neither attention nor adoration – like the AIDS victims.

But no, the marriage would never have lasted.

How did Charles feel when Diana died?

I think how he felt was written all over his face outside the hospital in Paris when he went to retrieve her body. There was much shock and pain in his face and the way he stood showed a very weary man.

The marriage may have ended bitterly, but it seems from things I read before her death that they were coming to be friends because of their bond with the boys. I think she was setting things up to have a life that was half in and half out of the Royal circle. She wasn’t going to ever be completely out because of her sons. Nowhere have I ever read that they tried to keep them from her.

On the contrary, they knew she was needed and so she was allowed to keep her home in Kensington so there was still a spot of normal for them. She saw them as often as she could and I think in time, if she had not died, she may have been found at Balmoral and at Sandringham for at least some of the festivities.

I think that the Prince and Princess of Wales both knew there was wrong in both sides and were making peace with the past. That she didn’t live long enough for that to happen I’m sure pained the Prince. I never felt like he didn’t care about her. She may not have been his true love, but he did care about her.

Conclusion

Camilla at diana funeral, Why would she? Charles was over Diana from around 2–3yrs into their relationship. Camilla was Charles’s partner, not Diana’s family, friend, acquaintance, colleague, staff or admirer. At that time people blamed Camilla for what happened to Diana even though Camilla was not the one who drove her around Paris in a reckless manner whilst being under the influence of alcohol, nor did she persuade Diana to ditch her seat belt which in essence could’ve saved her life.

It was a case of damned if she didn’t go and damned if she did, personally I think she made the right decision in staying away, even for the sake of Diana’s family. Camilla at diana funeral. Why did she not attend funeral?
