Travel requirements and restrictions can change, so it’s important to check the latest information from official sources before planning your trip. As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, here are general guidelines for traveling from the UK to Egypt:
1. Passport and Visa:
- Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date. British passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival in Egypt, which allows stays of up to 30 days. However, it’s recommended to check the latest visa requirements before traveling.
2. COVID-19 Travel Restrictions:
- Given the ongoing global pandemic, there may be specific COVID-19-related travel requirements. Check for any entry requirements, testing or quarantine measures, and vaccination requirements that may be in place.
3. Flights:
- There are direct flights from various airports in the UK to major Egyptian cities like Cairo, Sharm El Sheikh, and Hurghada. Airlines offering these routes may vary, so check with airlines for the most up-to-date schedules.
4. Health and Vaccinations:
- It’s advisable to check with your healthcare provider for recommended vaccinations and health precautions for travel to Egypt. Some vaccinations may be required, and it’s common for travelers to take precautions against diseases like hepatitis A and typhoid.
5. Currency:
- The official currency in Egypt is the Egyptian Pound (EGP). It’s recommended to have some local currency for small expenses, but major credit cards are widely accepted in tourist areas.
6. Local Customs and Etiquette:
- Familiarize yourself with local customs and etiquette. Respect cultural norms, dress modestly in conservative areas, and be aware of local laws and regulations.
7. Safety and Security:

- Egypt is home to iconic historical sites such as the Pyramids of Giza, Sphinx, Luxor, and the Valley of the Kings. Be sure to plan your itinerary to explore these attractions.
10. Travel Insurance:
- Consider purchasing comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen events.

Egypt: Entry
The Egyptian government has allowed international flights to and fro Egypt’s airports since 1 July 2020. Some airlines have special requirements, such as wearing face masks. Before you fly, make sure to check with your airline. Travel to Egypt from the UK
All Egyptian authorities have informed that Egyptian arrivals will be subject to medical measures. All passengers from all countries must complete a monitoring card with their details. They will also need to confirm that they have a valid health insurance policy. Passengers from countries with C19 variants of concern may need to undergo a quick COVID-19 test (ID now) upon arrival.
All persons, including Egyptian nationals, who arrive from abroad to Egypt will need to show a certificate of negative PCR testing and the test date. According to Egyptian authorities, should perform PCR tests no more than 72 hours before flight departure. Only passengers arriving at London Heathrow can have their PCR tests done no later than 96 hours before departure. Negative PCR test certificates are not required for children under six years of age.

Passengers with a COVID-19 vaccine certificate are exempted from having to present a negative PCR test at arrival. A valid vaccination certificate issued by an accredited laboratory must be linked to a QR code. After receiving the total doses of the Pfizer (Johnson and Johnson), Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Sinopharm vaccines, passengers must have passed 14 days.
Passengers from countries with COVID-19 variants of serious concern may still need to undergo a quick COVID-19 test (ID Now) upon arrival. If positive, it will lead to a second PCR test. Before you fly, make sure to check with your airline about any specific requirements.

In 1922, the British archaeologist Howard Carter made, almost by chance, the most significant archaeological discovery of all time: the tomb of Toutânkhamun.

His body was wrapped in linen, and on his face was a gold mask, undeniably the most beautiful of the kind we found in the world so far.

Follow the Egyptian authorities’ advice and remain vigilant in crowds and large gatherings. The British Embassy Cairo website has a list listing all public holidays. Egypt’s leaders maintain a substantial security presence throughout the country. It includes armed security officers stationed at critical infrastructure and essential sites as well as road checkpoints. Tourist sites are subject to additional security measures.
Direct flights between the UK, Sharm el-sheik, and the UK were suspended following the October 2015 crash of a St Petersburg-bound flight. The threat of terrorist attacks on aviation in Egypt remains high. For flights from Egypt to the UK, additional security measures are in effect. It is important to cooperate fully with airport security personnel. British passport holders who travel to Egypt often require a visa.
Call 122 (police), 180 (fire), or 123 (ambulance) to reach the emergency services. Contact the nearest British consulate or high commission if you need immediate assistance while abroad. Consular assistance is limited in Egypt, where we discourage all travel. It is also limited in Egypt, where we recommend against travel.
