You should’ve already known that drinking booze in Dubai required a licence. Although, the city hasn’t been keen on enforcing this law by going out to catch people consuming alcohol without a licence, where an individual was found to have taken alcohol without a licence, say by getting arrested for some other offense, they’d also be prosecuted.
Apart from having an alcohol licence as a consumer, sellers also need to have their variant. But with the new UAE law update, you can consume, be in possession of and sell booze in Dubai and the rest of the UAE including Abu Dhabi and Sharjah without a licence.
It seems Dubai has been on this alcohol licence for a minute now as in August they rolled out a new smart system to ease getting the licence. But, as made known earlier, happily for consumers, no need for a licence any longer.
The update notwithstanding, there are still restrictions. A person must still be at least 21 years old to drink legally in the UAE and anyone caught selling alcohol to someone deemed under age (a minor) will be punished.
Alcohol can only be consumed privately or in licensed public places. Driving and drinking in Dubai should still be an offence.
Abu Dhabi ended its alcohol license system for residents in September. Previously, a licence was needed to buy or consume alcohol. This federal law will now apply to all emirates.
